The Artisan Series
Where acoustic heritage meets modern engineering
Five Expressions of the Artisan Approach
The JS is a modern jumbo shaped for players who want power without sacrificing balance. Its large body delivers the depth and volume expected from the form, but recent refinements in John’s building approach give it a smoother, more responsive voice across the dynamic range. It handles aggressive playing with ease yet still offers clarity and warmth when approached with a lighter touch. The strong low‑end foundation also makes the JS an exceptional platform for a 12‑string, where the added shimmer sits comfortably over its confident bass response.
The SJ is a modern small‑jumbo designed for players who want the fullness of a larger body without the weight or boominess that often comes with it. Its refined curves and updated internal architecture give it a strong, supportive low end paired with a clean, articulate top response. The SJ handles both light fingerstyle and more aggressive rhythm work with ease, maintaining clarity and balance across the dynamic range. It’s a versatile instrument that feels immediately comfortable yet continues to reveal depth the longer you play it.
The FS is an OM‑sized guitar offered with either a 12‑ or 14‑fret neck connection, shaped for players who value clarity, balance, and comfort. Its refined body lines make it an excellent stage instrument and a natural platform for an acoustic pickup, while its clean sustain and even response appeal to dedicated fingerstyle players. The FS delivers accurate, musical overtones that translate just as well in the studio as they do in a quiet living room session, making it a versatile choice for players who want nuance without sacrificing presence.
The SD is a modern slope‑shouldered dreadnought shaped for players who want power, warmth, and versatility in a familiar outline. Originally developed in the Custom Series, it has evolved into a refined model available with either a 12‑ or 14‑fret neck connection, each offering its own balance of response and feel. The SD handles strumming and flatpicking with ease yet remains articulate enough for fingerstyle, making it a flexible choice for a wide range of players. Through thoughtful wood selection and voicing, the SD can be tailored toward a player’s preferred style, delivering a confident, full‑range voice that feels both classic and distinctly modern.
The GP is a compact, refined take on the early 20th‑century parlor, shaped with a modern outline that brings new life to a familiar form. Its 12‑fret neck connection shifts the bridge into a more active part of the soundboard, giving this small‑bodied guitar a warm, vintage‑leaning bass and clear, confident trebles. The result is a surprisingly strong and projecting voice — the kind that often catches players off guard. For its size, the GP delivers an impressive blend of intimacy and power, making it a compelling choice for anyone drawn to smaller instruments with a big musical presence.
The Artisan Series
Where acoustic heritage meets modern engineering
The Artisan Series represents John’s original acoustic designs — instruments shaped by a deep respect for tradition and guided by a modern, physics‑driven approach to tone. Each guitar begins with a carefully selected Sitka spruce top that is dynamically tested using sine‑wave excitation to reveal stiffness along and across the grain. By mapping nodal patterns, measuring density, and calculating modulus of elasticity, John determines the ideal top and back thickness for each body size. This data feeds into his custom “thickness predictor,” allowing him to voice each plate with precision before a single brace is glued.
The tops feature John’s double X‑brace system, a structure that blends the reliability of traditional X‑bracing with enhanced stiffness distribution and improved control over the monopole and cross‑dipole modes. The backs use a radial bracing pattern inspired by the research of Trevor Gore — adapted and refined to create an active back that contributes meaningfully to projection, sustain, and tonal complexity. A composite honeycomb bridge patch made from maple provides exceptional strength‑to‑weight performance and efficient energy transfer.
Necks are built from solid or laminated mahogany with accents of maple, rosewood, or ebony, and are reinforced with John’s custom‑made titanium truss rod — lightweight, rigid, and exceptionally stable. Truss‑rod access is located at the headstock through John’s Stealth access system, supported by a diamond volute and a rear headstock veneer, a design encouraged by James Olson and executed with John’s own aesthetic touches. The headstock itself features John’s SSP (Straight String Pull) layout for improved tuning stability, paired with a fully compensated bone nut and saddle informed by the work of Trevor Gore and the Guild of American Luthiers. The saddle is set at a 7‑degree back angle, creating a self‑compensating geometry that maintains intonation even when action adjustments are made.
Standard features include an ebony fingerboard and bridge, Gotoh 510 tuning machines, hardwood bindings and purflings on the top, back, and sides, a back stripe, a traditional rosette, and a wood‑bound headstock with matching rear veneer. John uses unslotted bridge pins — each individually numbered — to maintain consistency and ensure perfect fit.
Available in five original body shapes — the 14″ Grand Parlor, 15″ Fingerstyle, 16″ Small Jumbo, 16″ Slope Dread, and 16‑5/8″ Jumbo — the Artisan Series blends the best of acoustic tradition with modern structural insight. These guitars are designed to be responsive, balanced, and expressive, with lines and curves that carry a unified aesthetic throughout the instrument. The Artisan Series is the culmination of John’s philosophy: don’t reinvent the wheel, but refine it with intention, curiosity, and craftsmanship.
